SIL vs SDA vs ILO Explained (In Plain English)

These terms can be confusing. Here’s a simple way to understand the difference.

SIL (Supported Independent Living)

SIL is a support model focused on daily living assistance. It usually involves rostered support for people who need help throughout the day (and sometimes overnight). SIL is about the supports, not the building.

SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation)

SDA relates to the housing itself — the physical home designed for specific accessibility or support needs. SDA is not the same as SIL, but many participants who live in SDA may also receive SIL or other supports.

ILO (Individualised Living Options)

ILO is about creating a living arrangement that suits you. It can include different combinations of support and living setups — for example living with a host, living alone with drop-in support, or other tailored arrangements.

Which one do I need?

It depends on:

  • Your daily support needs and routines
  • Your housing requirements
  • Your safety needs and overnight supports
  • Your goals for independence and community participation

Next step

If you’re unsure, talk with your support coordinator or provider. A good provider will explain options clearly and help map supports to your goals.
